1ST EARLY SEED POTATOES
1st Early's or some times called new potatoes are the first of the potatoes to be planted in mid march. plant in well prepared soil ideally done the previous winter with plenty of organic matter added. dig out a trench one spade deep line the trench with good compost or well rotted manure and place the well sprouted tubers 30cm(12") apart. cover back over with the excavated earth as the shoots grow out of the soil earth up this dose two things covers up the tubers to prevent them going green and also protects the new shoots from frost. the potatoes should be ready for lifting from mid June early July. just have a feel around the base of the plants first if you find a tuber there will be more underneath. most 1st early are best eaten as dug and not suitable for storage.
